Of Her Own Kind is about creating modern heirlooms and treasuring old ones. About preserving craft and promoting human-scale manufacturing with a conscience: quality over quantity and maker over mass.
Our womenswear clothing line is designed in Brooklyn and made in the New York garment district.
We believe in creating thoughtful, wearable pieces with unexpected details to give its wearer a sense of surprise, ease, and luxury.
We work with small, independent, family-owned factories in New York that have worked in the area for generations and have survived despite more and more manufacturing moving overseas. Making our clothing in New York means being knowing the names of the people who make our clothes and supporting an industry on the brink of disappearing.
Treating clothing as a craft instead of a disposable commodity is at the core of our design process: we emphasize natural fibers such as silk, cotton, and wool and artisan finishing such as French seams, bias bindings, and hand embroideries.
Of Her Own Kind is designed & founded by Kathryn Alex is inspired by summers spent at her grandparents' farmhouse in rural Maine, extended travel in India, and the beauty of upstate New York.
Kathryn honed her skills in luxury design while working as a designer at Prabal Gurung where she fell in love with the craftsmanship of the New York garment district. Kathryn lives in Brooklyn with her husband and dog Josephine and escapes to the Catskills as much as possible.
